Senior Frontend Engineer (React)

  • Memrise
  • Full time
  • United Kingdom
  • 15/02/2021

About Us:

Memrise is an award-winning language learning system with a growing user base of over 50 million. By leveraging lots of brain science and plenty of humour, we’re striving to enrich people’s consciousness and help people achieve confident, real-world language skills in just a few short months.

The Opportunity:

Memrise has a small web team that punches above its weight. We are half way through migrating away from our Django system into a brand new React one. After that we have ambitious plans for completely new features which markedly improve language learning.

We’re looking for someone to add to our already impressive knowledge in React but also to act as our subject matter expert on the frontend of our product. We have an exciting stack that needs a contributor with extensive frontend knowledge as well as awareness of best practices in this area.

This is an opportunity for someone to focus on developing not only their own skills but also contribute to architectural decisions and help the team learn and grow, alongside the Engineering Manager.

The Team:

Our web team is made up of a diverse and talented mixture of backend and frontend engineers. We are led by a hands on Engineering Manager alongside three developers with a mixture of technological experience.

We are currently looking to expand our frontend expertise and if you consider yourself to be a highly competent and knowledgeable React Engineer we’d love to talk with you.

Our team values empathy for the people we work with and the community we work for. We support each other. We are purposeful in our actions and effective at collaboration.

This position is open as a remote position to anyone in the UK. Though the team is mostly based in London, we are committed to building a sustainable remote-first culture.

In this role you’ll:

  • Play a focal role in the development of user interfaces for our web based product
  • Provide technical leadership around our frontend with exceptional knowledge around React and ideally some experience with server web infrastructure, such as Django, Rails, CDNs or Node.js
  • Overall we are looking for someone to aid Memrise’s code quality and architectural decisions as a Senior Engineer in the team

You might be a good fit if you have/are:

  • Outstanding web development skills - expertise of HTTP, JS, CSS, web standards, accessibility, browser compatibility and performance.
  • Good knowledge of React, Typescript, Babel, Webpack or equivalents and building single page web applications. Familiarity with related backend technologies, such as Next.js or Node.js.
  • Ability to autonomously make good technical choices that solve business problems.
  • Experience working with product managers and designers to produce high quality user interfaces.
  • Strong product focus and commitment to good design and user experience.

Within 1 month you'll:

  • Introduce an important architectural improvement to our React codebase
  • Fix two thorny unfixed bugs, which the team otherwise could not have done

Within 3 months you'll:

  • Other web frontend engineers say they’re learning a lot and are more productive because of you
  • Have helped us to fully migrate core flows to React quicker than we otherwise would have - our velocity has increased significantly

Within 6 months you'll:

  • Help introduce significant new features which radically improve digital language learning
  • Impact the quality of the product, getting to the point where we fix all bugs and are improving performance metrics
  • Be proud of the product and the codebase

Salary: £65,000 - £85,000

  • Share options, so you can retire on an island
  • Generous Learning and Development budget for training, conferences, books and L&D leave
  • Enhanced Parental Leave
  • Flexible working options (time-wise, plus we have standing desks)
  • Private health insurance with Vitality, and related perks (50% off a Virgin and Nuffield Health Gym memberships)
  • Dental Insurance with Unum
  • Quarterly hackathons
  • Language classes with in-office and virtual tutors
  • Pet friendly office and pet-petting colleagues
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • And plenty more fun you’re welcome to ignore, including: dodgeball, meditation, football, running club, board games, and boxing classes.

We’re an equal opportunity employer. If it’s okay, we’re not going to list examples of people and groups we don’t discriminate against. We don’t discriminate, full stop. We celebrate.

What’s it like to work here?

Interesting. Fun. Challenging. Serious. Odd. Silly. It just depends on the day, really. But whatever day it is, we love what we do: helping people all around the world learn more about languages, new cultures and each other. They use our app to broaden their minds and horizons. And that feels pretty good.

You’ll join our UK team of open-minded, big-hearted, goal-oriented ‘Memrisians’, made up of linguists, developers, designers, marketers and more, all working together to do great things. Get in touch if you want to join the team.
